invisible man- scene four

SCENE FOUR

[ set: wide hallway, room to one side with a window looking into it. inside are yellow padded walls. ]

( NUTCASE runs along the hall)

NUTCASE- (shouting) I can't g in there! Lincoln's gonna eat me! No, no, no!

O.1- Lincoln's dead, you dolt!

NUTCASE- No, he's not! No, no, no!!

(O.1 grabs NUTCASE by the arms drags him back along the hall)

NUTCASE- (singsong) Their coming to take me away, ha ha! Their coming to take me away, he he, ho ho, hoo hoo! No, no, no!!

(O.1 and NUTCASE exit s.l.)

(SHERRY, O.2 and KATE enter. KATE is in a straightjacket, O.2 holds her shoulders.)

KATE- Let me go, let me go! ( Kicks out.)

O.2 - If you don't calm down I'll have to trank you!

KATE- LET ME GO!!

O.2 - You asked for it. (Jabs KATE with a prop syringe)

KATE- Ow! What the ... (slumps over, silent)

SHERRY- Thank God for that.

(MICHAEL enters s.r., silent.)

O.2- Get the door, ma'am?

SHERRY - (smug) Gladly.

(SHERRY opens the door, O.2 drags KATE inside, and shuts the door. He and SHERRY watch KATE sleep through the window. MICHAEL walks up behind them.)

MICHAEL- No. She really did it... By God, really did it.

(SHERRY looks over her shoulder, then taps O.2)

SHERRY- Did you hear something?

O.2- No, ma'am.

(SHERRY looks back at KATE)

MICHAEL- (directly to SHERRY)- What was that?

SHERRY- You sure you didn't hear something?

MICHAEL- Oh, so now you hear me?

SHERRY- (panicky) You don't HEAR that?!

O.2- Hear what!

SHERRY- That voice! It's right behind me!

(O.2 backs away, slowly)

O.2- There's nothing there!

MICHAEL- nothing. but. me...

SHERRY - (scared, shrill) YOU HAVE TO HEAR THAT!!

(O.2 runs off, exits any direction.)

(SHERRY watches O.2 run. MICHAEL stands in front of her)

SHERRY- what the... (looks up at MICHAEL)

MICHAEL- BOO!!

(SHERRY screams)

( KATE wakes, stands, goes to the window.)

SHERRY- Who the hell are you?

MICHAEL- I'm her invisible man. (Turns to Kate, who puts her hand to the window)

SHERRY- No. You aren't real!

MICHAEL- Oh, I'm real. (walks around to the door, SHERRY follows.) I'm very real.

(MICHAEL goes to open the door)

SHERRY- NO!

MICHAE- YES!!

(SHERRY grabs his arm and twists it back. MICHAEL breaks free, and hits her in the head. SHERRY falls in a faint. KATE screams and beats the window.)

(O.1 and O.2 enter. O.1 sees MICHAEL, runs away. O.2 carries SHERRY offstage)

(MICHAEL opens the door, KATE stumbles out)

KATE- What did you do?

MiCHAEL- She fainted.

KATE- (sarcastic) Sure she did.

(They kiss. Curtain closes.)
